Stormflower is owned and operated by David Martin, one of the founders of Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle, the Alex Hotel in Perth and Weelhamby Farm in Perenjori. David bought the vineyard in June 2007 with two friends and bought out his partners in 2014. With David’s daughter Alex and son in law Tim now living locally and both involved in Stormflower, it is becoming more deeply rooted as a small family business.
The aim of Stormflower is to create a wine business that is small, single vineyard and produces wine of the highest quality but does not take itself too seriously. Being located in Wilyabrup among some world class wineries it is important to produce great quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and that is a constant focus of our team.
We opened our cellar door in 2013, after renovating the basic weatherboard cottage that was already on the property. The name Stormflower comes from the spring storms that hit the property most years, bringing with them strong winds and often hail. Despite the storms, the vineyard continues to flourish and provide the high quality fruit that becomes Stormflower wine.
Sustainable farming is an integral part of the Stormflower philosophy. We pay great attention to the health of the soil, and this results in a vineyard that is a healthy, biodiverse and resilient system. The vineyard has gone through many changes since we bought it in 2007. We began with a move away from chemical and synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, and transitioned to an organic system based on composts, natural soil biology stimulants and natural pest and disease management. We gradually moved the vineyard to a fully organic system and our formal organic certification process started in 2013. Stormflower achieved full organic certification in November 2016.
